Creative Writing Workshop call: what does home mean and how do we write about it?
Deadline 24 July 2026

This year’s Writers’ HQ Writing as Resistance Festival is an exploration of what home means, both physically and metaphysically, and how we write it.

What does home mean in a world where the security of the ground under our feet is increasingly insecure – through genocide, war and climate change – and how do we, as writers, tackle this?

This is a call for generative creative writing workshops exploring themes of diaspora, identity, the body and self, and concepts of home.

We particularly welcome pitches from writers belonging to systemically marginalised groups.

The workshops will run for one hour online during evenings (GMT) in September and the recording available for WHQ members to watch after in our workshop library. The standard fee is £150 for a one hour workshop.

Please email sarah@writershq.co.uk with your pitch by the 24 July 2026.

General call for workshops
Rolling deadline

We are always looking for new workshops to help light a fire under the butts of our brilliant writers.

If you are an author or workshop facilitator and you have something up your sleeve that you think our writers will love, please get in touch!

We run a monthly masterclass on any subject around creative writing, split into the following categories:

  • Productivity & Goal Setting
  • Novel writing
  • Short story writing
  • Flash Fiction writing

These workshops should be focused and specific. Think ‘Using Anthropology to Build Believable Words’ instead of ‘How To Write A Short Story’.

We also run a number of festivals throughout the year for which we accept pitches:

  • The Write A Short Story Festival (April)
Take your short stories from good to great with a month of in-depth workshops exploring the ins and outs of short story writing.
  • The Write A Novel Festival (June)
Workshops and events supporting writers to get deeper into their novels.
  • Writing as Resistance Festival (September)
A deep dive into the rebellious, subversive nature of creativity and what that means for an individual writer sitting in front of a laptop wishing things were better.

We pay £150 for a one hour masterclass.

We particularly welcome pitches from writers belonging to systemically marginalised groups.

Before you email a pitch please note the following:

Things we want from you pls:

Do be specific. A workshop on “productivity” or “writing a novel” is not specific. Saying you’re available to run any workshop is not specific. Get super granular and in-depth. Bring us your special interest and infodump right in our faces. Yeah!
Have fun and do something different. Turn ideas upside down. If we see something we’ve not seen before, we’ll likely snap it up.
Be deeply you. Authenticity > predictability.

Things we do not do:

We do not run workshop about earning money from being a writer/making it as a freelancer.
We do not run workshops about journalism or copywriting. Only creative writing – in this context means fiction, creative non-fiction, memoir, poetry.

Email sarah@writershq.co.uk with a brief outline of your suggested workshop and your bio.

Read this before going to the forum!

The widget that lets you sign into the forum with your WHQ login has given up.

We are trying to coax it back into existence. So far neither bribery, begging or crying has worked. We are currently trying shaking our fists at the sky and going ‘grrrr’.

You can still get to the forum though! Do this:

  1. Click the button below
  2. On the forum login page, click reset password USING THE SAME EMAIL YOU USE FOR WHQ
  3. Click the link in the email and reset your password

IMPORTANT: This means you will have TWO (2) passwords/logins. One for the WHQ main site and one for the forum. It’s a pain in the arse. We’re sorry. It is temporary, but at least you can dick about on the forum again. OKAY BYE.

Once you hit the button, you’ll get a confirmation email, and we’ll send you the Zoom link an hour before the event.

We’ve sent the Zoom link to your inbox and we’ll send it again one hour before the event.

If you don’t get an email, check your spam fist and then wang us a line on help@writershq.co.uk and we’ll leap into action with keenness and speed.
