Name: Sally Port Magazine

Deadline: N/A

Wordcount: Mid-Grade (8 – 12 year olds): maximum 10,000 words, but stories of 2,500-3,000 words are preferred; YA (12 – 18 year olds): maximum 20,000 words, but stories of 2,500-10,000 words are preferred; General Fantasy: maximum 13,000 words.

Genre: Fantasy, this includes: Mid Grade; YA; General (Fantasy) Audience.

Description: Sally Port Magazine is an independent fantasy magazine for all ages. They publish stories for mid-grade, YA, New Adult and general fantasy audiences, and non-fiction about writing and the publishing industry. They use a blind submission process. For any stories and articles they publish in the magazine, they pay $0.05 per word.

Genre: Memoir, personal essay, creative non-fiction and excerpts. Visual art: fine art, illustrations, comics, photography, graphic storytelling and visual narratives.

Description: Memoir Magazine is an online literary publication that features artwork (including photography, illustrations and word art), short-form memoirs, creative non-fiction essays, interviews, and book reviews. They also feature sound projects such as audible projects, podcasts, and spoken word. As stated on their website, they aim to support storytellers through publication, education and advocacy.

Name: Ware Poets Open Poetry competition

Deadline: Midnight (UK time) 30th April 2025

Wordcount: No longer than 50 lines

Genre: Poetry

Description: This year’s Ware Poets Open Poetry Competition is judged by author Hannah Copley. First prize: £800, Second prize: £400, Third prize: £200, Sonnet prize: £200. All prize-winning and commended poets will be invited to read their poems at an informal celebratory prize-winning event. All winning and commended poems will be featured in their Ware Poets Open Competition 2025 Anthology.

Genre: Flash fiction (no theme, no genre)

Description: Tadpole Press 100-Word Writing Contest encourages diverse stories, unique perspectives, and entries from marginalised writers sharing their authentic voices. First place: $2,000, Second Place: Publishing and marketing package with Compassiviste Publishing, Third Place: Manuscript assessment package with Compassiviste Publishing, Fourth Place: Editing Package with Tadpole Press, Fifth Place: Writing coaching package with Tadpole Press, Sixth Place: $100.

Wordcount: Opening three chapters and maximum 10,000 words, and a full plot outline of no more than 1,000 words.

Genre: Narrative Fiction

Description: The Wilbut & Niso Smith Foundation is a charitable foundation dedicated to empowering writers, promoting literacy and advancing adventure writing as a genre. Their New Voices Award supports writers to develop an idea they’ve yet to commit to paper or those in the very early stages of their work in progress. This Award is exclusively for unpublished writers and provides mentorship and editorial guidance for aspiring writers.
