Description: Type! Is a free magazine in A4 format that doubles as a bookmark. How cool is that! Each issue includes short stories, poems, writing prompts and a literary quiz. They’re currently not able to pay contributors but they will work with authors to promote their piece and other writing.

Name: Mslexia Fiction Competition
Deadline: 23 rd September 2024
Genre: flash fiction, short story, and children’s & YA novel
Word count: flash fiction up to 300 words, short story no more than 3,000 words, children’s and YA novel first 3,000 words of the novel which must be at least 20,000 words.
Description: Mslexia is a magazine for women writers. First prize in the flash fiction competition is £500, three additional finalists will receive £50, and all four stories are published in the magazine. Winner of the short story category will receive £3,000, three additional finalists will receive £100 and all four winning entries are published in the magazine. First prize in the Children’s and YA novel is £5000 and the winner will also receive feedback from the Literary Consultancy and will be introduced to literary agents (in partnership with New Writing North).

Name: Togetherness Poetry Challenge 2024

Description: As stated on their website: ‘For some writing can be therapeutic. With conflict across the world and climate change looming, we believe creativity and unity are vital. This is why we, Civil Society Consulting and Edinburgh Interfaith Association – are running a national poetry challenge.’ All poems will be published on their website and some selected poems will go in an anthology. 1st prize: £500, five runners-up will receive £100.

Name: Anthology Nature Writing Competition

Word count: Maximum of 1,500 words
Description: Anthology is a lifestyle magazine that runs several creative awards including their Nature Writing competition. As stated on their website, they are looking for the following: ‘Whether it’s the wonder of life right in your own garden, an encounter with wildlife, the serenity of a forest, a reflection on environmental challenges, or the healing power of nature, we welcome your stories.’ If Flash Fiction is more your thing, they are also running a flash fiction award (same deadline). Word count: Prose up to 2 pieces (this includes short fiction, play scripts, anecdotes) up to 3,000 words but preferably less, Poetry up to three poems ‘may be submitted, Artwork up 3 images may be submitted. These can be digital representations of any 2- or 3-dimensional work, including line drawings, paintings, illustrations, photographs, etc, regardless of original format or medium.
Description: North-East Scotland’s bi-annual magazine is now open for submissions for issue 18.
