This week’s prompts are:

POTENTIAL vs STIFLING

“Idris: Are all people like this?

The Doctor: Like what?
Idris: So much bigger on the inside.”
Neil Gaiman

“He wanted me to come home–to come home, as he said, and settle down, and whenever he said that I thought of the sediment at the bottom of a stagnant pond.”
James Baldwin

“We can be seized with panic of the fall, or inspired by the potential that lies within the fall.”
Craig D. Lounsbrough

“Somewhere in the world there is a defeat for everyone. Some are destroyed by defeat, and some made small and mean by victory. Greatness lives in one who triumphs equally over defeat and victory.”
John Steinbeck

What are these fiction prompts for please?

Every week, we post a set of flash fiction prompts. You write a super small short story (500 words or fewer), post it on our forums, give and receive feedback, and at the end of the month we pick our faves for our Flash Face Off online open mic night. It’s pretty amazingly awesome, and you should definitely join this particular writing challenge, as well as our super supportive and lush writing community. Yes, you should.

The Flash Face Off Challenge works like this:

      1. Use the prompts to write in any way that inspires you. Pick a side, pick both, pick a quote, pick an image, or just go with the general aesthetic and vibe of the themes. Whatever floats your writerly boat. And remember – flash doesn’t have to be dark and traumatic to be effective.

      1. Edit your writing into a beaut 500 word story and post it on the Flash Face Off forums (please submit no more than two stories per week, thanks!)

      1. While you’re waiting for the awesome writerly community to read your story and offer wise words and critique, read at least two other short stories and give your constructive feedback.

      1. On the last Friday of the month we gather all our writers and have a big ol’ open mic party on Zoom where you can read your work and listen to other great stories.

How do I get on the big ol’ open mic party?

    Sign up here: https://writershq.co.uk/creative-writing-retreats/flash-face-off-challenges/

    And that’s it!

    NO WAIT, ONE MORE THING!

Please do make good use of the workshopping forums to offer feedback to others, receive feedback on your own story, and tweak/edit as much as you like. This really is the absolute best way to develop your writing.

Ok, now we’re really done. Go write!
