NEW: Online Writers’ Retreat for coronavirus-stuck writers

Sooooo, uh, remember when we were all ‘oh ha ha society lying in ruins, coron-overreaction‘? Yeah about that…

Before the whole zombie apocalypse thing, we ran 15 one-day writing retreats* across the UK each month, but for the health and safety of our beloved writing community we’ve made the (very difficult but kinda no brainer) decision to put our retreats into self-isolation for a few months as we understand that there are lots of people for whom travel and gathering is now problematic.

HOWEVER. While our retreats are on hiatus, we don’t want anyone missing out or sitting at home feeling all lonesome, or getting constantly distracted by yet another meme and oh look a bee instead of, ya know, actually Doing The Work.

That’s why we’re running regular online writers’ retreats every weekend for the foreseeable future – retreats you can attend from the comfort of your own self-isolated sofa and still turn out a few thousand words.

Simply join us for a brief morning webinar where we’ll outline the plan for the day and get you to set your writing targets, check in at set times on Twitter or our community forums and use our gang of awesome writers to help keep you motivated and accountable. Then at the end of the day check in for a debrief, gold stars, and rounds of applause for all your hard work.

And and and and and also guess what? IT’S FREE! Yes it is. Just register using the linkydinks below. (But if you’re able and would like to support a very smol business full of smol people you can donate to our cause via the WHQ Writing Bursary which sponsors low-income writers to access our courses and retreats and is a great way to pay it forward.)

*You can still book future real life writing retreats for June and beyond here, or transfer existing bookings to later dates by emailing [email protected]

(all times are GMT but if you register for a place you can watch playback at any time)

10am: intro webinar and goal setting with Sarah, Jo and/or one of our excellent and very lovely retreat reps (approx 30 – 40 mins)

12noon: First check in on Twitter or our community forum

2pm:  Second check in on Twitter or our community forum

4pm: debrief webinar, final check and gold stars (approx 30 – 40 mins)

We’ll run the webinars on Crowdcast. No download needed, just turn up on the day (or register now if you fancy).

Check ins will be on Twitter or our community forum

FREE (or pay as you feel by donating to our Writing Bursary!)

What do I need to

  1. Register using the links above
  2. Rock up to Crowdcast at 10am on your chosen date and join the webinar (no download needed)
  3. Write in sprints throughout the day, edging ever closer towards your goal, and check in at the given times
  4. Join us for the debrief at 4pm
  5. Sit back and bask in the warm glow of a day well written

Who can join

Yes. Anyone. You might be someone who has decided not to travel or socialise due to coronavirus, or who has been instructed to self-isolate, or who isn’t in a risk group but just wants to join in anyway. All welcome. Come write!

  • Hi. I am in a completely different time zone – as in, not in Europe. Being proactive I am going to register hoping that it is being recorded and I can follow it through the next day. How solid is my reasoning here?

    • Ah thanks Kate! I suspect we’ll carry them on but don’t want to commit to anything just yet 🙂
