Did you know that hawthorn trees were known as portals to another realm? Or that Norfolk once celebrated a Fairy Cow? Did you know that every single story features some elements of folklore, from story structure to character tropes, magical rules to world creation?

Journeying through the old meanings of flora, fauna, strange traditions and rituals, we’ll be looking at how regional beliefs and superstitions can inspire and enrich any novel, no matter the genre. Grab your hag stone, bring your stories and gather round the fire to explore how folklore can build a world.

What we’ll learn:

  • The importance of folklore in storytelling and writing, and just how many books feature folkloric elements
  • How to build and enrich your novel’s world using folk tales, old beliefs and traditions
  • How to research and cherry-pick the folklore that works best for your story – and maybe even how to twist it…

This event is hosted by ✨Emily Randall-Jones✨

Read this before going to the forum!

The widget that lets you sign into the forum with your WHQ login has given up.

We are trying to coax it back into existence. So far neither bribery, begging or crying has worked. We are currently trying shaking our fists at the sky and going ‘grrrr’.

You can still get to the forum though! Do this:

  1. Click the button below
  2. On the forum login page, click reset password USING THE SAME EMAIL YOU USE FOR WHQ
  3. Click the link in the email and reset your password

IMPORTANT: This means you will have TWO (2) passwords/logins. One for the WHQ main site and one for the forum. It’s a pain in the arse. We’re sorry. It is temporary, but at least you can dick about on the forum again. OKAY BYE.

Confirm your place at Hawthorn & Hag Stones: Using Folklore to Build a World.
