Wild Draft March starts on Sunday 1 March 2026 and we are all going to write a whole bunch of words. Yes we are. Even you, Writer-buddy.
Here is a handy dandy eff-ay-kew explaining what is going on, why you are being strong-armed by your friendly but feral writing coach into participating, and what it all actually means.

What is Wild Draft March?
It’s a whole month of writing!
Throughout March, we’re going to commit to writing a wild draft of something – it could be the novel you’ve just plotted in Plotstormers, it could be that you want to keep the momentum after Couch to 5k Words, it could just be that you want to write a bunch of words alongside a whole load of other people.
Whatever your reason, we’re writing a butt load of words in March and you should join us.
What is a wild draft?
It’s the draft you vomit out of your brain to get everything you know about your story into the world. The one where you set yourself an absurd goal, such as 1,000 words a day for 30 days, or 500 words a day for 20 days, or 2,000 words a day for 45 days, or whatever feels right for you, just to get the dang thing down. There’s a whole blog about it here.
But! It doesn’t have to be for a novel draft. It could be that you want to write a short story or two, or ramp up your flash portfolio. It might be that you just want to commit to your writing more regularly and want to do it alongside the best writing gang in town.
Whatever it is you’re doing, it’s about a commitment to your own wild and magical writing.
How do I participate?
Start by setting your writing goal for March. Here are some examples:
- I want to write a 30,000 word draft of the novel I just outlined in Plotstormers. That’s 1,000 words a day.
- I want to write 500 words three times a week and I’m working on a short story.
- I want to write a piece of flash fiction every week and post in the FFO forums.
Once you’ve got that, come tell us in the Goal Setting thread on the Wild Draft March forum.
Decide when you’re going to do it, stick it in your calendar, and then guess what you do next? Yes. You write.
What events will be happening?
All the usual stuff!
Write-Alongs every Monday, the Writer Support Group on Wednesday 12 March, and the online writing retreat on Sunday 29 March.
Plus! The March masterclass is looking at how voice works in short fiction (but all the strategies and techniques can all be used for longer fiction too).
Book everything on the events calendar here.
If you need help planning a suitable goal, you can watch the goal setting workshop from Write November (which is the same thing, it’s just we’re doing it now, not in November), or blat through the Guide to Productivity for a whistlestop tour of getting your writing done.
Who is Wild Draft March for?
Everyone who wants to dedicate some time and space in March to writing their story. (That’s you. We’re talking about you.)
Why are we wild drafting in March?
Because a staggering number of you have just finished Couch to 5k Words and need to keep your momentum going, or you’ve just finished Plotstormers 2026 and have a draft to write, or you’re feeling like you’ve not written as much as you want so far this year and need an end-of-Q1 push, or just because it’s fun and we love a good ol’ Collective Writing Shenanigan.
How do I sign up?
There is no official sign up for Wild Draft March. It’s a vibe. It’s an aesthetic. It’s a personal commitment to your craft.
But do make sure you have at least a freebie WHQ membership so that we can send you prompts, pep and reminders to write all your lovely words.

Okay that’s it! That’s what we’re doing and hopefully what you’re doing and all-in-all it’s going to be fun and excellent and grand and wonderful.
