Brighton Writers’ Retreat

Let’s get your story written. Tea, croissants, gold stars, lots and lots of words, and the best writerly community around.

A bonus Brighton Writers' Retreat for October IN A BOOK SHOP!

Yes that's right. We're running an extra retreat in October at Afrori Books on North Road so you can spend the day writing surrounded by lovely, lovely books. Mmmmh books.

The original and the best one-day writing retreat in lovely Brighton

Sometimes what you really need is simple: time, space and a whole load of tea and biscuits to get writing.

Well, it just so happens that’s exactly what happens at Brighton Writers’ Retreats.

Because, look, we get it. We have the same writerly problem. We make the grandest of plans – Booker Prize winning plans! Pulitzer winning plans! – but life gets in the way.

There’s always one more thing to do, or one more stupid thing to look at on the Internet. Before you know it, it’s gone midnight, you’re sitting in your pants eating Dairy Milk, and you’ve written 25 words. Ugh.

That’s why we developed our writing retreats, in which we turn off the wifi and make you get on with it.

We help you set a writing target for the day, ply you with caffeine, cake, and gold stars, and keep you pepped up and motivated all day long.

All you have to do is, uh… write.

Our (in)famous writing retreats were born in Brighton all the way back in 2012, and you’ll find a whole range of writers here — from novelists to short fictioneers, screenwriters to poets, academics to journallers. Everyone is welcome.

So c’mon down to B-town and let us help you. Because the only way to get your writing done is to sit down and write.

Anything else?

Writers’ HQ retreats are strictly no sharing events!

We want you to focus on writing your story instead of getting anxious about other people reading it.

There is no workshopping or taught element to the retreats. It’s just about the writing.

Who's hosting?

It’s either going to be Anika Carpenter, Paul Macauley, or Sarah Lewis.

Anika Carpenter lives and works in Brighton, UK. Her flash fiction can be found online in various publications, including – Ellipsis Zine, Janus Literary, The Molotov Cocktail and Reflex Fiction. Her work has been shortlisted for the Bath Flash Fiction Prize and the Bridport Prize. You can find her via her website @StillSquirrel or at The Flash Cabin, a cosy spot on the virtual vista where she hosts online workshops and courses.

Paul Macauley has been making things since he was small. All the way from tiny Batman costumes made of bin-bags to becoming an award winning writer and theatre maker. As a writer and maker he is working on a novel (who isn’t, right? Keep going everyone!) and a short film and a novella and a theatre show and… you get the picture. Seeing others realising their creative ambitions inspires him, so he also works as a creative coach – helping people to live, make and share what they love.
