Too many options when it comes to submitting your work? Here’s our top five comps and subs for November 2024. 


Name: Apparition Lit

Deadline: 14th November 2024 

Wordcount: up to 1,000 words

Genre: Speculative flash fiction. Theme for November as described on their website: Stews, soups and curries, inspired by the many hearty and flavorful flavors that can bring heat, and flavor, to our meals.

Description: Apparition Lit is a speculative fiction magazine that publishes flash fiction, poetry, short fiction, and non-fiction essays. They are specifically interested in strange, misshapen stories with enough emotional heft to break a heart, with prose that’s clear and delicious as broth. Every month, they hold a themed flash fiction contest, the winner receives $30, and their flash fiction will be published on the website.

Name: The SmokeLong Grand Micro Contest (The Mikey)

Deadline: 15th November 2024

Wordcount: no more than 250 words (excluding the title)

Genre: micro fiction and nonfiction

Description: The Mikey is an annual competition celebrating micro fiction and non-fiction online. Unpublished and previously published work will be considered. The winner will receive $1,000 and will be nominated for The Best Small Stories Fiction, 2nd prize will receive $500, third prize $300, and finalists $100. All finalised and placers will be published in the December 2024 issue of SmokeLong.   

Entry fee: US$13 for up to two entries; US$19 for up to four.

Name: Anansi Archive Writing Awards

Deadline: 30th November 2024

Wordcount: Flash fiction: up to 500 words; Short fiction: up to 3,000 words; poetry: up to 500 words

Genre: Flash fiction, poetry, and short stories 

Description: Anansi Archive writing awards run quarterly, award winners cash prizes, and showcase the work on their website. As stated on their website, here’s what they are looking for: ”In fiction: originality, strong characterisations, vivid scene-setting, conciseness of prose. Strong pay-off lines are not mandatory but we like a satisfying denouement.  In all writing, have something to say and ask yourself this:  Does it make me think? Does it make me feel?” 

Entry fee: flash fiction: £1 per story; poetry: £1 per poem; short fiction: £3 per story

Name: The Bath Children’s Novel Award 

Deadline: 30th November 2024

Wordcount: first 5,000 words plus one page synopsis, or up to three picture book texts with summaries.

Genre: Children’s novels, chapter books, YA novels, and picture book texts 

Description: The Bath Children’s Novel Award is a £5,000 international writing prize for unagented authors who may be unpublished or self-published. The winner will receive £5000 and a trophy. Short-listed writers will receive feedback, and one longlisted writer will win a place on an 18-week online novel course run by Cornerstones Literary Consultancy and the professional Writing Academy.

Entry fee: £29.99 per submission, sponsored places for low-income writers are available.

Name: Anthology Travel Writing Competition

Deadline: 30th November 2024

Wordcount: no more than 1,000 words

Genre: Travel writing

Description: Anthology is a lifestyle magazine featuring interviews, travel destinations, fashion and beauty, interiors, art and culture. For their travel writing competition, they encourage new and established writers to share their authentic travel experiences. They are looking for an engaging article that will capture the reader’s attention, conveying a strong sense of the destination and the local culture. The winner will receive €500, and their work will be published in a future issue of Anthology.
